Meetings

Mountain Biking in Gunnison Colorado

The Gunnison County Trails Commission meets the second Monday of every month, 6 p.m., at Gunnison County Public Works Department, 811 Rio Grande, Gunnison, unless otherwise noted.

Mission

The mission of the Gunnison County Trails Commission is to protect, plan, develop and manage trails to promote alternative modes of transportation, to provide access to public lands, and to promote the recreational economy of Gunnison County. The Trails Commission is charged to develop a trails system which respects the rights of private property owners, facilitate communication between interested parties, and work with private entities and local, state and federal agencies to enhance the trail system.

Current/General Priorities

The Gunnison County Trails Commission lists the following as the highest priorities for the commission as well as pursuing possible grant funding.

  • Historic Routes.
    • Identify historic routes that access public land through private property.
    • Pursue public access easements on these routes wherever possible and oppose closure of these routes when necessary.
  • New Trails.
    • Be alert for opportunities to create new trails on private or public lands.
  • Trail Opportunities.
    • Explore opportunities as they arise for trails such as Contour, McIntosh, W Mountain and Baxter Gulch.
  • Improvements of Existing Trails.
    • Participate in clearing, re-routing, maintenance of drainage, signing and establish new alignments and protection of habitat and/or wetlands.
    • Construction of walkovers in areas of high trail use to alleviate problems with the opening and closing of gates.
  • State Highway 135.
    • Pursue additional right-of-way be dedicated for a trail corridor preferably separate from the roadway, as land use changes occur adjacent to the highway, especially from Brush Creek to Crested Butte South.
    • Work in conjunction with utility companies to place a trail in utility easements where appropriate.
    • Establish Safe Routes to School for Kids along Highway 135 from Crested Butte to Brush Creek and from Ohio Creek to Gunnison.
  • Crested Butte to Carbondale.
    • Work with the U.S. Forest Service to restore the historic Kebler Pass Wagon Road to become a multi-use route.
    • Work with private property owners to obtain trail easements to extend the multi-use trail over Kebler Pass to Horse Ranch Park and east on Kebler to the Town of Crested Butte.
    • Work in conjunction with West Elk Loop Scenic Byway and other entities to connect to Carbondale with reference to West Elk Loop Scenic & Historic Byway Crested Butte to Carbondale Trail Feasibility Study.
