Phil Chamberland was born August 19, 1960 on a potato farm in northern Maine. He is the seventh born of 10 children.
Phil served in the Unites States Air Force from 1978 to 1982. While on active duty in Ramstien Germany Phil met his wife Missy.
Phil moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the spring of 1982 after being honorably discharged. Unable to find work as an aircraft mechanic, Phil pursued a career as a heavy line mechanic in the automotive industry. His work ethic, dedication and leadership skills allowed Phil to advance to shop foreman in 1988, where he ran the 37 bay operation for a Buick dealership. In 1990, Phil was recruited as service manager for a large operation in the suburbs of Atlanta. There he was in charge of the service, parts and body departments, with combined operations of $350,000 to $450,000 monthly gross.
Phil and Missy saw the birth of their first child, Erika, in 1992 at which point Phil became “Mr. Mom”. Their son Joey was born in Gunnison in 1994.
After an extensive search of the Rocky Mountains, in 1994 Phil and Missy landed in Gunnison where Missy started her solo orthopaedic practice. Since then, Phil has worked in the practice and learned the in’s & out’s of the business of medicine. He also owns and operates Gunnison Valley Construction, an excavation business, in Crested Butte. He served on the Gunnison Valley Hospital Board of Trustees for eight years. Phil also served on the Gunnison County Planning Commission and the Gunnison County Fire District Board. Phil is an active 4H supporter. He has been active with trails groups in the County and the State, and sat on the Colorado State Trails Commission. Phil is an avid supporter of Western State Colorado University, currently sitting on the Mountaineer Athletic Association board and the WSCU advisory council. He has been a member of the MAA since 1994. His farming background has made him a strong supporter of ranching, and gives him perspective of the challenges faced by agricultural operations.
Phil was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in November of 2014.
