Introduction
Gunnison County is a very unique place we call paradise. Covering over 2 million acres of land, 87% is publicly owned and administered by The U.S. Forest Service, The National Park Service, and The Bureau of Land Management. 400,476 acres of this public land is designated as Wilderness Areas. The City of Gunnison is the largest incorporated area in the county as well as the County seat. The current population is 5,254.
Originally a ranching and mining town, today Gunnison's economy is mainly dependent on tourism and education. Tourism accounts for roughly $35 million annually, and education accounts for another $26 million. Ranching still comprises $8 million. Gunnison's role as a hub of trade for the many smaller communities in the area has diversified, yet many of its roots still remain.
Ranging from a busy college town, to lively resorts, from active recreation sites to dusty ghost towns; this place we call home offers both; amazing history of the American west and a taste of popular culture.
With an eclectic and diverse culture, the people of Gunnison share a neighborly relationship. They are loaded with local character, and the pace of life follows the seasons. The people in our community are more than a familiar face; they each hold their part in keeping Gunnison working like a well-oiled machine. From peaks that reach over 14,000 ft to hundreds of miles of rivers and streams that empty into the Blues Mesa Reservoir; there is something for all outdoor enthusiast all year round!
