The Shady Island River Park project is a parcel of land just north of Gunnison at 2714 Hwy 135 (north of Garlic Mikes) that Gunnison County purchased in 2017. The County is proposing to replace the CDOT North Bridge boat launch area on the west side of the highway and develop a boat launch and other amenities at the Shady Island River Park site.
Shady Island River Park is envisioned as a keystone component of a future river corridor system stretching from Almont to McCabes Lane. Gunnison County utilized a GOCO planning grant in the summer of 2018 to develop conceptual maps and a master plan based on public input collection from multiple public engagement events. The new River Park will provide safe public access for community members, visitors, anglers, and boaters with the construction of a formal boat launch area and access to the Gunnison River.
Shady Island River Park will allow ample parking for bicycles, cars, trucks, and trailers. The site will also include tent camping sites, camp host, picnic shelters with restrooms, trail loop system, recreation path connection, fishing access, boat staging area, beach area, access for non-boaters, outdoor classroom and gathering areas, picnic tables, and a boat queue area. Some details in the master concept may change in the Land Use Change process based on public comments received at public hearings and recommendations from the planning commission.
The Shady Island River Park project is scheduled to go through the County Land Use Change process within the next year. County staff is currently pursuing grants to fund the project and to date, August 2019, total grants received are $390,000.00. To further expand our funding efforts, Gunnison County has partnered with the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley as of August 2019 to create a new donation fund for the Shady Island River Park project.
