[ARCHIVED] Zebra Mussels Detected in the Colorado River for the First Time

Zebra Mussels

Last month, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) confirmed the first detection of adult zebra mussels in the Colorado River near Grand Junction — a major concern for the state’s water systems and recreation economy. The river is now classified as “infested” from the 32 Road bridge downstream to the Colorado-Utah border.

These invasive mussels can clog pipes, damage infrastructure, and devastate aquatic habitats. That’s why CPW and local partners — including those managing inspection and decontamination programs at Blue Mesa Reservoir and along the Gunnison River — play a critical role in protecting uninfested waters. Continued funding for these inspection programs and public cooperation are essential to keep these safeguards in place.

Boaters and paddlers can help by always cleaning, draining, and drying their equipment after every outing. And remember, Colorado law mandates boat inspections for most motorized and trailered boats entering and exiting the state's waters.
